An ongoing exhibition focusing on the evolution of WheatonArts as a vital arts organization! Presenting highlights of contemporary artworks made by our international community of artists and interpreting the people, place, and process that inspired them, the exhibit tells a story of creativity’s exploration specific to WheatonArts. Honoring 50 years of glassmakers at the Center, visitors will discover collaborations that artfully combine vision, artifacts that serve as muse, and the tools that connect skills across time.

Step into the enchanting worlds of Philadelphia-based artist and educator Amber Cowan! Cowan uses centuries-old flameworking, hot sculpting, and glassblowing techniques to transform pressed glass into exuberantly adorned diorama-like wall installations and free-standing sculptures. Her dense narrative assemblages are often personal and lure the viewer into fantasy worlds rich with symbolism and themes of transformation, femininity, and nostalgia.

Thanking members of the armed forces for their service, WheatonArts is offering free Make-Your-Own experiences to veterans and active duty military* during the Veterans Day Glassmaking program. Participants and their families* will receive complimentary passes to WheatonArts during the event. With the expert guidance of our glass artists, learn how to shape hot molten glass into a beautiful Air Trap Paperweight using a historic antique mold unique to WheatonArts! Amber Cowan integrates her own blown and flameworked elements with pressed factory glass to create lush wall installations and free-standing sculptures. Join Cowan and curator Mary Mills as they discuss her work and the current exhibition, Alchemy of Adornment, on view at the Museum of American Glass through December. They will share how they worked collaboratively to interpret the art alongside objects from the Museum collection and to provide context for the rich historical colors in Cowan’s work. Wheaton Conversations: West African Drums & Drumming with Maxwell Kofi Donkor

Join us for an in-depth discussion and live demonstration by the master artist Maxwell Kofi Donkor as he shares stories about the origins of African drums as well as their use and symbolism among the African communities of his homeland of Ghana. He will discuss his experience with receiving training and knowledge about this ancient art from his grandfather, Nana Donkor – a master drummer and linguist from Kumawu-Besoro of the Asante Kingdom of Ghana. Kofi will demonstrate different styles of drumming and comment on the effects of drumming on community building and well-being today. To learn more and register, click here.
