Nicole Jurain wheel-throws and hand-carves each piece using multiple stoneware clay bodies simultaneously — clays that differ not only in natural color, but in texture, density, and properties, making their union a technically demanding discipline that has taken decades to master. By removing the outer surface of the horizontal pattern through carving, the natural and organic layering beneath is exposed, revealing compositions in Black/Dark Brown, White/Cream, Tan/Beige, and Red/Rust that could not be planned — only coaxed into being.

Based in the Hudson Valley, Nicole finds her inspiration in the strata of natural structures found in the landscape around her — the layered rock faces, the stratified riverbanks, the way the earth reveals its own history through line and color. Her pieces are held in museum shop collections and carry the kind of quiet confidence that comes from decades of devoted practice.
