As a 72 year old retiree, I needed to find a hobby that could “grow old with me”. So a friend of mine suggested a I try woodworking. Well, I took his advice and jumped in. Starting from ground zero, I took my time, listened to those who know the craft and decided that whatever form this craft took, it would be the best I could possibly do. I chose to make cutting boards because I could use imagination and produce a product that satisfied my creativity and would be attractive and useful to others. Choice of materials was also a concern to me. I wanted to use woods that were non-toxic and safe for food preparation. All woods used are safe for food preparation, cutting and serving. All finishes also needed to be food safe. Towards that end, I use only mineral oil, beeswax and carnauba wax for my cutting boards. All of these finishes are used in prepared foods.
