Located in the Down Jersey Folklife Center
April 1 through November 14, 2022
This exhibition provides a visual comparison between traditional textiles of two indigenous communities of Latin America—the Chilean Mapuche people and the Guatemalan Maya. Both Mapuche and Maya artists create artworks that speak about identity and cultural heritage in a modern interconnected world, weaving ancestral knowledge and wisdom into present-day ways of life. The exhibition also features Chilean horsehair (crin) miniatures of religious and secular objects—flowers, animals, or human figures—that aim to engage viewers in a conversation about the dynamics of living traditions over time, their social, artistic, and ritual messages conveyed by the artworks and by the nature of the creative process.

Saturday, May 7
10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
In partnership with the Authority of Cumberland County, WheatonArts presents the 15th annual ECO Fair, a FREE Family Day event inspired by natural and artful living!
ECO Fair highlights across the WheatonArts campus include local gardening clubs, including Rutgers Master Gardeners, with various plants and herbs for sale, handmade works of New Jersey artists, environmental organization booths, Nature Trail tours, eco-friendly activities for families, and more. This year we have incorporated in ECO Fair a festival that presents the humans/nature relationships as interpreted in the cultures of the Central and South American communities in our area. This “Awakening of Mother Earth” festival symbolizes a new season that brings new expectations, hopes, and celebrations that reconnect us with Mother Earth through ritual, art, music, and dance.
Admission to all WheatonArts exhibits and artist studio demonstrations are free and open to the public for the day, part of “WheatonArts Family Days presented by PNC Arts Alive!“ ECO Fair: Awakening of Mother Earth is presented in partnership with The Authority of Cumberland County, CU Maurice River, and Rutgers Master Gardeners.

Threads of Time & Wisdom: Chilean & Guatemalan Fiber Arts
