Gilbert is a self-taught wood sculptor who began experimenting with wood at an early age.
Growing up in a family and community where woodworking was common, there was no shortage of inspiration. My inclination, however, was towards sculpting rather than the cut & join of carpentry, because even at such an early age, there was a level of comfort and mastery using a hand tool. As a result, I did not prioritize formal training in this field.
My sculptures are a mix of both functional and decorative. I specialize in working from hardwoods such as Walnut, Black Walnut, Oak, Cherry and Poplar, all American grown woods. Each piece is 100% hand made and is my own design. They are finished with clear Urethane and oils to protect and preserve the wood while revealing the beautiful grains.
