Forked River, NJ
In 1995, I was introduced to the art of woodturning, by Robert (Bob) Broschart, who had been my mentor and adviser in all aspects of woodworking. After briefly engaging in scrollsaw-based art, I found myself attracted to the spontaneity and freedom of expression offered by woodturning. I purchased my own equipment and began to invest more time in woodturning. When I retired from my position as a NJ State Trooper in 2004, I had a great deal more time for woodworking and especially woodturning.
As apprentice to Bob Broschart for more than twenty years, I learned and developed the skills of a woodturner. I have assisted with the transportation, set up and break down for shows and demonstrations. Eventually, I was offered the opportunity to demonstrate on the lathe. For a number of years, I demonstrated the woodturning process at Greenwich Market & Artisan Faire and Wheaton Festival of Fine Craft.
In 2010, I pursued an apprenticeship, through New Jersey State Council On The Arts, to work with Master Woodturner, Bob Broschart, to develop my skill in the production of glass blowing blocks and molds. I was fortunate to be selected to continue this training for a second-year apprenticeship. I am occasionally assisting glassworkers at Wheaton by providing necessary shaping blocks and handles. In 2016, when Bob Broschart retired from demonstrating, I was accepted as a Demonstrating Artist, and from 2017 onward I have demonstrated the technique of woodturning and have exhibited my work at the annual Wheaton Festival of Fine Craft. Consistent with my mentor, my specialty is in turning natural-edge bowls, but I continue to evolve as an artist and I’m always seeking new ways to be creative.
