WheatonArts Volunteers
In 1984 a group of dedicated glass collectors
with a strong interest in the glassmaking experience formed
the WheatonArts Glassblowers. This dedicated team of
volunteers – Frank Stubbins, Jeff Vanaman, Harry Deemer and
Jim Engleman, travel with a portable glass furnace to present
demonstrations of traditional glassmaking techniques to crowds
of fascinated spectators at fairs, festivals and Museums
throughout the tri-state area.
The volunteer glass blowers share an interest in the creation of both traditional and contemporary glass. They are assisted in their travels by Matt Schooley and Marie Stubbins, who answer questions and handle sales of the pieces produced by the team.
More than 100,000 people each year have enjoyed watching the glassblowers at work. The members of the group have collectively logged more than 50,000 volunteer hours over 20 years of dedicated service to Wheaton Village.
In 2003 the WheatonArts Glassblowers were selected to receive the Paul Aiken Encore Award, honoring their years of dedicated service to WheatonArts and their outstanding contribution to the arts in southern New Jersey. They were also recognized by ArtPRIDE New Jersey, Inc. for their efforts to educate the public about glassmaking, while preserving the traditions of the art.
