Every Sunday ALL children 17
and under will be admitted FREE!
Kids 17 and under are FREE every Sunday beginning June 26 through the end of 2011; made possible by PNC Arts Alive, a 5-year, $5 million initiative, designed to support visual and performing arts.
The following Sunday’s programming will be enhanced to include hands on activities, special programs and events to coincide with our great everyday exhibits and demonstrations. For more information about the PNC Arts Alive initiative, contact Katherine Landberg at klandberg@wheatonarts.org.
• Sunday, November 6: 11am-4pm, Storytelling and Holiday Craft in the Museum Stores. Storytelling: 1pm and 3pm in the General Store:Selected readings from a new children’s book series.
Recycled Puzzle Craft:11 am to 4 pm in the Gallery: Always wondered what to do with puzzle with missing pieces? Turn it into a handcrafted holiday ornament. Make a candy cane, wreath or tree ornament with puzzle pieces.
• Sunday, November 13: Make Your Own Instruments, 12pm-2pm. Make your own instruments in the Museum of American Glass and celebrate our newest exhibit: New Harmonies, a partner project with the Smithsonian Institute and the New Jersey Council for the Humanities. Music ties together all of humanity and learning how to make musical instruments gives kids a deeper understanding of music's power. You will learn how to make Tissue Box Guitars, Cylinder Drums and Pie Plate Tambourines from common household objects!
• Sunday, November 20: Make Your Own Instruments, 12pm-2pm.
Music Appreciation: Storytelling and Performance with Jim Albertson 2pm-4pm. Jim Albertson will present traditional folk tales and ballads and show how various qualities of voice and speech can help to create characters and involve the listeners imagination in seeing the story as it unfolds in the minds eye.
• Sunday, November 27: Vitreous Music: The Making of Holiday Instruments in Glass in the Glass Studio 10-4
Vitreous Music: The Making of Holiday Instruments in Glass Join us in our studio during the Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend and watch our glass artists create amazing traditional and imagined instruments out of hot, molten glass. Both percussive and wind instruments will be designed and created before your eyes. From 1pm-3pm our staff will be available to help you play these marvelous instruments for yourself!
• Sunday, December, 4: Handmade Wrapping Paper and Gift Tags, with Julie Tippie 12pm-2pm. Learn to make handmade wrapping paper and gift tags to add a personal touch to the gifts you give to family and friends this holiday season. Kids will learn to use pattern, color, texture and found objects to make expressive gift wrapping materials!
Instrument Making Presentations 2-4pm. Instrument Making Presentations by David Field (Appalachian dulcimer and Celtic harp) and Jim Albertson (mouth bow harp). Learn about the instrument making process and enjoy listening to their musical performances.
• Sunday,December 11 : Handmade Holiday Ornaments, with Julie Tippie, 1pm-3pm. Create unique, handmade ornaments to decorate your home for the holidays!
Instrument Making Presentation, 2-4pm. Mark “Quiet Hawk” Gould (Native American drums). Come and learn about the old techniques of Native American drum making and experience the sound of this sacred instrument.
• Sunday, December 18: Hanukkah Music and Crafts, 2-4pm. Visit us for a special Hanukkah program, listen to Hanukkah songs and let your children experience some Hanukkah crafts.
