NEW WHEATONARTS PROGRAM - “OLD TRADITIONS RECONSIDERED: PAINTING ON GLASS” - FEATURES DISPLAYS AND SPECIAL DEMONSTRATIONS

MILLVILLE, NJ – A new program, “Old Traditions Reconsidered: Painting On Glass,” will be presented in the WheatonArts Education/Folklife Center on April 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This Mid Atlantic Folk Arts Outreach Project features the work of Haitian-American artist, Kesler Pierre, and J. Kenneth Leap, WheatonArts Associate Artist and Education Chair of the American Glass Guild, and special demonstrations in traditional glass painting by both artists. Traditional tools will be arranged on light tables and exhibition pedestals in the front gallery. The demonstrations take place in the Education/Folklife Center from 10 a.m. to Noon, and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Leap will demonstrate traditional glass painting techniques using kiln-fired pigments. His work will provide a reflection on an art form that is associated with the sacred spaces of medieval Europe and will be interpreted in both its historical developments and contemporary relevance.

Pierre will communicate the symbolic meanings of the traditional Haitian veve designs while painting them on glass or drawing them with flour on a flat surface. His work will be interpreted in the context of the traditional Haitian belief system and ceremonial practices as well as from the perspective of his unique artistic experience.

The program is included in the price of admission to WheatonArts: Adults $10.00, Senior Adults $9.00 and Students $7.00. Children five and under are free. For more information WheatonArts, call 1-800-998-4552 or 856-825-6800, or visit online at www.wheatonarts.org.
