WHEATONARTS HOSTS LARGEST JUDGED QUILT SHOW

IN SOUTH JERSEY

MILLVILLE, NJ – Visitors to the “A Garden of Quilts” Quilt Show at Wheaton Arts and Cultural Center, March 20 and 21, will see over 250 examples of quilters’ art, from traditional bed quilts to contemporary wall hangings. Presented by The Garden Patch Quilters (National Quilting Association Chapter 541), the show is the largest judged quilt show in South Jersey.

Special exhibits include “The South Jersey Crazy Quilt Guild,” “The Garden Patch Challenge” and “The Australian Charity Quilt.” The raffle quilt, “Floral Fantasy,” is queen size, hand-appliquéd and hand-quilted. Tickets cost $1.00.

Schools or children up to 16 years old are encouraged to enter quilts. The “Junior Division” exhibit showcases the creativity and clever workmanship of a talented future generation of quilters.

Show judge, Judith Gunter, is a National Quilting Association certified judge, teacher, lecturer and award winning quilter. Gunter has taught and lectured regionally at the Williamsburg Quilt Festival, the World Quilt and Textile Festival, the Quilter’s Hall of Fame, Pennsylvania National Quilt Extravaganza, and Quilt Odyssey.

Gunter’s quilts have been displayed at the Schweinfurth Art Center in New York, the International Quilt Show in Houston, the American Quilter’s Society Quilt Show in Paducah, the Maryland State House and several local and regional shows. Her work has been published in Miniature Quilts, Traditional Quiltworks, Quilting Today and Ladies Circle Patchwork Quilts magazines.

Quilts will be judged in nine categories divided by techniques. Awards include first, second and third in each category, “Judge’s Choice” and “Viewer’s Choice.” The “Best in Show” award is a one-of-a-kind, blown glass trophy created by WheatonArts artist Don Friel.

In addition, the show offers a vendor mall, boutique table and Sit and Stitch. Quilting demonstrations will take place every hour from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on March 20, and noon to 4 p.m. on March 21.

Quilt appraisals by Karen Dever, AQA Certified Appraiser, will take place in the Museum of American Glass lobby each day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Verbal (pre-1975 only) appraisals: $20.00. Written appraisals: $45.00.

Show hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The show is included in the price of admission to WheatonArts. Admission to the show is $8.00. Children five and under are free. Visitors can also visit the Museum of American Glass and museum stores. Food and refreshments are available for purchase in the Event Center. Free parking.
