wheatonarts hosts free lecture by stained glass artist Jonathan Cooke
MILLVILLE, NJ – In his only U.S. venue, British stained glass artist,
Jonathan Cooke, will conduct a free public lecture highlighting his career on
October 22, at 7 p.m. in the WheatonArts Event Center. The lecture is the
concluding event of his week-long master class in glass painting at
WheatonArts.
Cooke was born near Barnsley in 1962, and has been
fascinated by the play of light through stained glass for as long as he can
remember. At the age of sixteen, he began a four year apprenticeship at York
Minster, and has worked in stained glass ever since, researching in particular
ancient techniques and recipes, which he puts to use in restoration and his
original painted pieces alike. Since 1987, he has been in private practice as a
stained glass conservator and artist. He also teaches a short course twice
yearly in glass painting at Swansea Metropolitan University and at the
University of York. In England, he serves on the Stained Glass Committee of the
Church Buildings Commission and several Diocesan Advisory Committees.
Cooke’s workshop in glass painting has attracted
national interest. Workshop sponsors Kathy Jordan of Art of Glass in Media, PA,
and long time WheatonArts artist-in-residence, J. Kenneth Leap, explain, “We
had the idea to invite Jonathan to give a workshop because he is a master of
his craft. The techniques he practices just aren’t known here in America. They
spring from an educational system which is completely different.”
Cooke’s workshop, which was open by invitation only,
has attracted ten stained glass artists from across the country. Participants
are from California, Nebraska, Michigan, Arizona, Wisconsin, Ohio, New York,
and Pennsylvania. An exhibition of work produced during the class will be on
display.
