"Winter Weekends" Feature Free Admission

“WINTER WEEKENDS” AT WHEATON ARTS AND CUTURAL CENTER FEATURES FREE ADMISSION TO THE MUSEUM OF AMERICAN GLASS

 

MILLVILLE, NJ Wheaton Arts and Cultural Center has announced that it will offer free admission to the Museum of American Glass during its winter operating schedule in January, February and March. The organization is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday beginning January 9 and continues through March 29.

 

The Museum of American Glass has the most comprehensive collection of American Glass in the world from the first glass bottles made in America to celebrated works by world renowned artist Dale Chihuly and other contemporary artists who work in glass. Over 7,000 objects are on display. The museum will feature the annual “Curator’s Choice” exhibit in the Special Exhibition Gallery January 16 through March 31. The museum curator selects pieces from the collection not often seen by the public and new pieces obtained in 2008. The exhibit, “Treasures From The Collection: Museum of American Glass,” can be seen in the major exhibition area.

 

In addition, WheatonArts will offer “Winter Weekends,” a series of classes, demonstrations and interactive activities for children and their families beginning January 17 and continuing every Saturday and Sunday through March 22. 

 

The following hands-on activities are free and take place in The Gallery of Fine Craft.

 

“Nature Craft Series” – Saturdays only. January 17 through March 21. 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Activities include pine cone feeders, Huichol Indian (Mexican) stick weaving, seed and bean mosaics, Native American dream catcher from the Ojibwa culture, gourd creatures, fruit and vegetable stamping, and planting seeds in decorated pots.

Selected Hands-On Activities – Saturdays and Sundays. January 17 through March 22. 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Activities include crayon and non-toxic stamps and markers, make-your-own bracelet, decorate a spiral mobile/spinner, tissue paper craft, still life in “Sketchers Corner,” origami crane and origami box, duct tape wallet, and make-your-own greeting card.

The following “fee-based” workshops begin at 2 p.m. and last 45 minutes to an hour in length. Class sizes are limited. No pre-registration. Member discounts do not apply for these workshops.

January Workshops - Torn Paper Découpage, Design A Diorama, The Art of Mehendi (Henna Painting) and Carving In Soap.

February Workshops - Lenni-Lenape Pine Needle Basketry, Making Mosaics, Freshwater Pearl Necklaces, Interactive Storytelling, Building Figures With Polymer Clay, Introduction To Polymer Beadmaking, and Quilted Picture Frame.

March Workshops - Painting On Glass, Create A Glass Stepping Stone, Introduction To Bead Necklaces, Ukrainian Pysanka (Easter Egg Decorating), and Fused Glass Tiles.

The museum stores are also open during January, February and March from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is free to shop and stoll. The Glass, Pottery and Flameworking Studios and Down Jersey Folklife Center are closed during these three months. They will reopen April 1 when WheatonArts returns to its six-day operating schedule.
