GALLERIES, ARTISTS, CURATORS, AND COLLECTORS GATHER FOR GLASSWEEKEND ‘09 AT WHEATONARTS

MILLVILLE, NJ - The Creative Glass Center of America (CGCA) and the Art Alliance for Contemporary Glass (AACG) present, GlassWeekend ‘09, July 17, 18 and 19. Since 1985, GlassWeekend, a biennial event, has brought together the world’s leading artists, collectors, galleries, and museum curators for a three-day weekend of exhibitions, lectures, hands-on glassmaking, artists’ demonstrations, and social events. The guest speaker is James Yood, renowned critic and writer. The event is sponsored by Frank Crystal & Company, an insurance brokerage firm located in New York, NY, with offices throughout the U.S.

The proceeds of GlassWeekend benefit the CGCA Fellowship Program, providing working fellowships to twelve individual artists from around the world each year. Additionally, as the event’s co-presenter, the AACG dedicates portions of the proceeds to help fund Museum exhibitions that further the development and appreciation of art made from glass.

This year’s guest artists are two couples: Kari Russell-Pool and Marc Petrovic, Sibylle Peretti and Stephen Paul Day. All are successful solo artists who also work collaboratively.

Petrovic makes pieces that are predominantly glass but also contain wood and metal components. Russell-Pool is primarily a flame worker. Although they strive to retain their individual work and approach, they have collaborated, to a greater or lesser extent, since college. Each offers insight and suggestions on the other’s work. The collaboration between the two artists most often incorporates Petrovic’s blown birds into Russell-Pool’s structures.

Based in New Orleans and Cologne, Germany, American artist Day and German artist Peretti have collaborated under the name Club S & S since 2000. Both individually and as collaborators they have shown extensively in international and national institutions, foundations, museums and biennials. They have been awarded multiple residencies throughout Europe and the United States where their work is also part of permanent public collections in Germany and New York.

The artist demonstrations take place over the weekend on a rotating schedule in the Glass Studio. A private demonstration for GlassWeekend registrants is scheduled for Sunday morning.

The art galleries seen in the Event Center show the most current work of over 200 professional artists working in glass today. It is considered one of the most extensive presentations of museum quality glass vessels and sculpture assembled in one location. The exhibiting galleries are:
