WHEATONARTS OFFERS WORKSHOPS AND INTERACTIVE
ACTIVITIES FOR CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES EVERY
WEEKEND IN FEBRUARY
MILLVILLE,
NJ – WheatonArts’
“Winter Weekends,” a series of classes, demonstrations and interactive
activities for children and their families, continue every Saturday and Sunday
through March 22.
In February
the following hands-on activities are free and take place in The Gallery of
Fine Craft.
■ “Nature
Craft Series” – Saturdays only. 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Activities include pine cone
feeders, Huichol Indian (Mexican) stick weaving, seed and bean mosaics, Native
American dream catcher from the Ojibwa culture, gourd creatures, fruit and
vegetable stamping, and planting seeds in decorated pots.
■ Selected
Hands-On Activities – Saturdays and Sundays. 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Activities
include crayon and non-toxic stamps and markers, make-your-own bracelet,
decorate a spiral mobile/spinner, tissue paper craft, still life in “Sketchers
Corner,” origami crane and origami box, duct tape wallet, and make-your-own
greeting card.
The
following “fee-based” workshops begin at 2 p.m. and last 45 minutes to an hour
in length. Class sizes are limited. No pre-registration. Member discounts do
not apply for these workshops.
■ February 14
- Interactive Storytelling: A Victorian Valentine with Kathryn Ross. All ages. A $5.00 donation requested. Kathryn Ross
of Pageant Wagon Productions will bring a candy box full of Valentine stories
to warm hearts and tickle funny-bones. The 45-60 minute interactive story-time
features Miss Kathy in Victorian Valentine costume with various props and
costume accessories to engage youngsters in taking part in the story-telling
through role play.
■ February
15 - Building Figures with Polymer Clay with Josh Genereux. Ages 8 and up. Cost: $12.00 per person. Learn how to
sculpt with a clay compound used by movie studios, animators, and doll makers.
Known for its strength, versatility and tooling abilities Super Sculpey is
ideal for creating figure sculptures. Students will begin by making a metal
armature, a framework for their sculpture. Next, students will learn the basic
techniques and tools used with Super Sculpey. Participants are encouraged to present
ideas for human, animal or fantasy figures. Once finished, projects can be taken
home. Instructions on sanding techniques, carving and painting finishes will be
provided.
■ February 21 - Introduction to Polymer Beadmaking with Daryle Abeling. Ages 9 and up. Cost: $12.00 per person. Learn
how to create beautiful ornamental beads from polymer clay. This beginner’s
class introduces the basic materials, tools and techniques for beadmaking.
Students will take home unfired beads with instructions for firing and
finishing.
■ February 22
- Quilted Picture Frame with Pat Hemsley and Dianne Wood. Ages 8 and up. Cost: $7.00 per person. This is a
sewing and quilting project that involves a sewing machine. Instructors will
provide samples and individual attention for the creation of this project.
Attendees will go home with a completed magnetic fabric frame that can frame a
loved one and decorate your refrigerator, file cabinet or another metal
surface.

In February
and March WheatonArts is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
WheatonArts offers free admission during these three months only. It is free to
shop and stoll. The Museum of American Glass and all of the museum stores are
open. The Glass, Pottery and Flameworking Studios and Down Jersey Folklife
Center are closed during these three months. They will reopen April 1 when
WheatonArts returns to its six-day operating schedule.
