new jersey artist gateson recko featured at marble weekend at wheatonarts
MILLVILLE, NJ – Over 75 marble artists and dealers from across the country will be exhibiting in the Event Center at WheatonArts during Marble Weekend on June 23 and 24. Featured artist is Gateson Recko from Swedesboro, NJ.
A wide selection of handmade and machine-made antique marbles, contemporary marbles and marble related memorabilia will be available for sale. Throughout the weekend, nationally known marble artists will demonstrate their skills at the tank and at the torch in the Glass Studio and at the torch under a tent located outside the Glass Studio.
Recko received his degree in architecture but his artistic goals soon shifted from buildings to glass. In the mid 1990s he was a co-founder and artistic director of Hot Soup, Philadelphia’s first public glassblowing facility. After three years of furnace-worked glass, he turned his focus towards flameworking. In 2000, Recko moved to Taos, NM, where he started incorporating universe themes into glass spheres. It was during this time, that he began to push his own individual style. The Universe Marble was created and earned him first prize at the 2002 Albuquerque Flameworking Competition, the first of its kind. Recko’s focus remains on Universe Marbles and space related themes. Recently, his work has been shown at SOFA New York and Chicago and Palm Beach 3. His work can also be seen in the permanent collections of the Museum of American Glass at WheatonArts and The Corning Museum of Glass. Through his dedication to expanding the boundaries of the contemporary marble he has unlocked the limitless space within a glass sphere. Recko will demonstrate for registered Marble Weekend guests on Friday evening, June 22.
