MILLVILLE, NJ - Wheaton Village will offer a variety of special workshops for children and teens beginning in August and continuing through November. They are:
Monoprints on Glass
Instructor: Jean Jablonski
August 21, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
One Parent and One Child (ages 5 to 8)
Tuition: $20 Members: $18
Learn how to create beautiful one-of-a-kind prints using basic art materials. The class begins with a quick walking tour of the Village for inspiration. When arriving in the classroom, students apply water-based inks to glass printing plates to achieve various lines, shapes, and textures. A sheet of paper is rubbed onto the plate and gently removed to reveal a monoprint (one print!). These prints can be used as decorative paper for projects or framed. No experience necessary.
Wheaton Village Sketchbook
Instructor: Jean Jablonski
August 21, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. - Ages 9 to 12
September 17, 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. - Ages 13 to 17
Tuition: $32 Members: $28
During this workshop, students make their own sketchbook by marbling paper for the cover and learning a simple bookbinding technique to put it all together. Once the sketchbooks are complete students tour the grounds at Wheaton Village and spend time drawing the surroundings. At the end of the day students share what they’ve drawn. A fun filled afternoon for beginners and advanced. No experience necessary.
Painting on Glass
Instructor: Tricia Dufford
October 1, 10 a.m. to Noon
One Parent and One Child – Ages 5 to 8
October 1, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. - Ages 9 to 12
Tuition: $20 for one parent and child pair,
or one student (for ages 9 to12)
Members: $18
Artisans have been painting on glass for over 400 years. In this class students visit the Stained Glass Studio and the Museum of American Glass to observe and discover traditional examples of the craft. Afterwards students adjourn to the classroom to paint on recycled glass vessels (cups, bowls, vases, etc.) with permanent non-toxic glass paints. No experience necessary.
Fused Glass Tiles
Instructors: Beth Lipman and Tricia Dufford
August 20, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. - Ages 9 to 12
August 20, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. - Ages 13 to 17
Tuition: $30, materials fee: $5. Members: $31
Learn the basics of glass fusing. The class begins in the Museum of American Glass, where students observe and discuss early examples of kilnforming (melting flat glass together in a kiln, slumping or sagging the sheet into a mold). Students adjourn to the classroom where they learn to design, cut, and assemble colored sheet glass tiles. The tiles will be fired in a kiln after the class ends and can be retrieved later in the week. A perfect introduction to kilnformed glass. No experience necessary.
Fused Glass Ornaments

November 26
10 a.m. to 1 p.m. & 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. - Ages 9
and up
Tuition: $8 per ornament. Members: $7
Take a few minutes to make a beautiful glass ornament. Students learn the basics of the kilnforming technique known as fusing (melting flat pieces of glass together) while designing beautiful functional ornaments. The pieces will be fired in a kiln outside of class and will be available to take home during the following week. A perfect way to decorate for the holidays, make a gift and learn about glass. No experience necessary.
Particle Theories: Cast Glass Tiles

October 15, 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. - Ages 13 to17
November 26, 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. - Ages 9 to 12 Tuition: $48 Members: $43
Try your hand at casting glass. Pâte-de-verre (paste of glass) is an ancient technique first used by the Egyptians. Students begin the class with a special tour of the “Particle Theories: International Pâte-de-Verre and Other Cast Glass Granulations” exhibition in the Museum of American Glass. The class continues in the mold shop of the Glass Studio where students learn the basics of making cast glass tiles. Moldmaking, the preparation of frit (crushed glass), and filling the molds will be completed in class. Castings will be fired after the class ends and can be retrieved later in the week. No experience necessary.
Mosaic Birdhouses
Instructor: Janice Olivio
September 17 & 18, 1 to 3 p.m.
One parent and One Child (ages 5 to 8)
Two-day workshop.
Tuition: $38 Members: $34
Help the birds get ready for fall by making a colorful mosaic birdhouse. Glass, beans, and other found objects are used to explore the traditional art of mosaic. The first afternoon is spent learning the basics of design, layout and attachment of pieces. The second afternoon will be spent grouting and finishing the birdhouse. No experience necessary.
Pre-registration is required. Payment can be made with a credit card or a check made payable to Wheaton Village. Parent/child workshops require the participation of both one parent and one child.
