Red Hat Day

RED HAT DAY AT WHEATON VILLAGE

MILLVILLE, NJ – It has become a vast women’s movement. They wear red hats and clashing purple ensembles at all meetings to maintain the organization’s spirit and purpose. It is the “Red Hat Society” and Wheaton Village will host a “Red Hat Day,” April 30,
from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Village will offer a special $7.00 admission that day only for an adult or senior citizen woman who wears a red hat. Chapters are welcome to register their members. Red Hat Day is sponsored by Boscov's.

The day includes a tour of the Museum of American Glass featuring its new exhibition, “Particle Theories: International Pâte de Verre and Other Cast Glass Granulations,” and the Down Jersey Folklife Center. Highly skilled artists in the Glass and Craft Studios will demonstrate throughout the day. Red Hatters receive 10% off any item in the stores (excluding food items). In addition, there will be a Red Hat Parade with a prize for the most unusual costume. Red Hat Society vendors will be on site in the Event Center offering a wide selection of official merchandise. Registrants can also make a paperweight with advanced reservations. Cost: $55.00 plus $6.00 shipping and handling. Contact the Paperweight Shop at 800-998-4552, extension 152.

The Red Hat Society web site, www.redhatsociety.com, states, “Welcome to the place where there is fun after fifty (and before) for women of all walks of life. We believe silliness is the comedy relief of life and, since we are all in it together, we might as well join red-gloved hands and go for the gusto together. Underneath the frivolity, we share a bond of affection, forged by common life experiences and a genuine enthusiasm for wherever life takes us next.”

The “Red Hat Society” began when Sue Ellen Cooper of Fullerton, CA, and a few friends took inspiration from a popular poem entitled, "Warning," by Jenny Joseph, which begins, "When I am an old woman." Since the poem mentions wearing a red hat and purple attire, she and her friends formed a group that met on a regular basis for tea in their red hats and purple dresses. When Cooper and her friends were featured in Romantic Homes Magazine in July 2000, they began fielding inquiries from other women who wanted to start their own chapters. Today, most of the existing chapters are currently within the U.S. and Canada. There are a few chapters in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and Mexico.

For more information or to register a chapter, call 1-800-998-4552 or 856-825-6800, extension 100.

A registration form is available online at www.wheatonvillage.org. A buffet lunch will be available for purchase in the Event Center.  The PaperWaiter Restaurant and Pub, located adjacent to the Village, will be open for lunch also.

The Village is open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., April through December. Closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Open Memorial Day, Labor Day and Columbus Day. All attractions are included with the price of admission. General admission: Adults $10.00, Senior Citizens $9.00 and Students $7.00. Children five and under are free. Shopping and strolling is free except during outdoor events. Free parking.
