DOWN JERSEY FOLKLIFE CENTER AT WHEATON VILLAGE HOSTS SPECIAL “MEET THE ARTISTS” PROGRAM

Millville, NJ – The Down Jersey Folklife Center at Wheaton Village will host a special “Meet the Artists: Masters and Apprentices in Folk Arts” program on December 10, from 3 to 7 p.m. The event celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Apprenticeships in Folk Arts Program provided by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts and the 60th anniversary of the New Jersey Folklore Society.

The artists featured in the Folklife Center’s current exhibition, “Apprentice Wizardry: Mastership/Apprenticeship in Folk Arts,” will be introduced to the public. They are: Bernice Gasaway and Shirley Elliott Banks - African-American dolls; Fred Reitmeyer Jr. and Nancee Jo Luciani - Decoy carving; Herbert C. Pierce and William Mosley - Native American Drums; Elise Uiga and Sirje Geddis - Finnish Ryja rugs; Diomedez Matos, known as Yomi and Richard J. "Richie" Martinez - Puerto Rican Cuatro; Wenning Wang Han and Dorothy Lin - Temari balls; Eudokia Sorochaniuk and Vera Nakonechny - Ukrainian Weaving and Nyzynka embroidery; Armando Sosa and Rolando de Leon - Guatemalan weaving; Mann-Lih Huang, Jean Liu and Rose Ng - Chinese Knotting;Andrea Dalessandro - Rug Hooking; Dhriti Bagchi Bengalese Ritual Decorative Painting; Merline Rhodenand Althea Meade Hajduk- Jamaican Pottery; Mary May and Debra Simpson - Pinelands Region Basketry; Fusaye Kazaoka - Japanese dolls; Hanan Karaman MunayyerandRanda Munayyer- Palestinian embroidery; Alpa Thakkar - Kutchi embroidery; Ameurfina Nazario and Altavis Erz - Baybayin: Writing in Pre-Hispanic Philippines;and Ritu Pandya - Indian Mandala and Batik painting.

The program schedule:

3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Hands-On Craft Demonstrations.
Ukrainian Belt Weaving with E
udokia Sorochaniuk and Vera Nakonechny - master and apprentice in Ukrainian nyzynka embroidery and weaving. Visitors will be invited to try the technique of Ukrainian belt weaving and learn about the unique patterns specific to the Ukrainian region of Hutsul. Indian Mandala making with Ritu Pandya – master artist in Batik Painting and Mandala making. Visitors will be invited to participate in the creation of a thematic mandala “that reminds us of our relation to the infinite, the world that extends both beyond and within our bodies and minds.”

Special guest speaker, Sharon Harrington, New Jersey State Council on the Arts member.

5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Music Performances.

Puerto Rican Cuatro music performed by Richard Martinez, a famous cuatro and guitar maker who studied both cuatro music and cuatro making with the master artist Diomedez (Yomi) Matos. Philipino Rondalla Band (
Rondalla is a Philipino band consisting of various‑sized, 14-string instruments) led by the master artist Ameurfina Nazario. Nazario plays numerous indigenous instruments including the kulintang (brass gongs), tongali (nose flute), kubing (mouth harp), and bandurria (14-string lute).

Reception hosted by the Folklife Center’s Advisory Board.

The current “Apprentice Wizardry” exhibition features 98 items on display that show not only extraordinary talent in a variety of art forms and media, but also illustrate the richness of the cultural diversity in New Jersey. The artists represent 19 different ethnic and regional communities. The exhibition was created in honor of the 10th anniversary of the Folk Arts Apprenticeship Program that began in 1994 under the auspices of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts with the initial help of the National Endowment for the Arts. Since then, the folk arts apprenticeship program has awarded over a quarter of a million dollars in grants to more than 100 folk artists who are tradition bearers for over 90 cultures that exist in the state.

No admission ticket is required to attend the reception. The Down Jersey Folklife Center is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday, from noon to 5 p.m. It is open Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
