THE DOWN JERSEY FOLKLIFE CENTER AT WHEATON VILLAGE PRESENTS CRAFT WORKSHOPS
MILLVILLE, NJ - The Down Jersey Folklife Center at Wheaton Village will present a variety of craft workshops in February.
Traditional Japanese Origami: Things That Move and Wiggle Workshop, February 5, 1 to 4 p.m., in the Folklife Center. Instructor: Master Folk Artist, Fusaye Kazaoka. The workshop provides a unique opportunity to learn how to fold paper animals and other objects that move and wiggle. Participants will fold a bird that talks, a bird that flies, a fat bird, and a rabbit. Also, learn how to make a ring out of a $1.00 bill, or a magic boat. Workshop fee: Adults and Children (seven years-old and up), $10.00 plus $3.00 Kit Fee payable at registration. Class limited to 25 adults and children. An adult must accompany a child under seven years old. There is no charge for the assistants.
Hand Piecing 101 , February 19, 9 a.m. to Noon, in the Event Center. Instructor: Merry May, from Tuckahoe, NJ. Turn scraps of material into a hand-piecing project that can be worked on almost anywhere. Participants will start on a Tumbling Blocks project using a new product that eliminates the need for tracing templates. This class is helpful for anyone who has been thinking about trying hand piecing, or who would like to brush up on their hand piecing skills.
The following items must be brought to the class:
• Twelve- 4” squares of assorted scrap
fabrics (100% cottons)
• Straw needles or Sharps needles, size
10
or 11
• Lightweight 100% cotton appliqué
thread
in neutral color (beige or grey)
• Sharp pins, such as silk pins
• A pair of scissors for cutting fabric
Fee: $15 per person,payable to instructor in class. Class will be limited to 12 people.
Locker Hooking, February 19, 1 to 4 p.m., in the Event Center. Instructor: Merry May. This is an easy variation of rug hooking using a unique tool called a “locker hook.” Use old, ugly fabrics to create a small hot pad for table use that can easily be completed at home.
The following items must be brought to the class:

One- 6” by 44” piece of fabric for
project’s outer border
•
A variety of 1 1/4” by 44” strips
(strips may either be cut or torn)
• A pair of scissors for cutting fabric
Fee: $15.00 per person plus $9.00 Kit Fee (for remaining supplies), payable to instructor in class. Class limited to 20 people.
Hand Quilting 101, February 26, 9 a.m. to Noon, in the Event Center. Instructor: Merry May. An opportunity to learn the hand quilting process, including the versatile “quilter’s knot.”
The following items must be brought to the class:
• Sharp pencil• A thimble to fit the middle finger of the
dominant hand
• A small box of quilting pins, and a spool of
ecru hand quilting thread
• A pair of scissors for cutting fabric
Fee: $15.00 per person plus $5.00 Kit Fee (for remaining supplies), payable to instructor in class. Class limited to 12 people.
