This workshop will review and discuss the advantages and possibilities of firing at high temperatures (cone 10-11) in fuel fired kilns and talk about clay bodies, glaze chemistry, vitrification and firing process.  We will meet for the first class at the Arts and Innovation Center and make pots either wheel thrown or hand built and go over forms most suited for these processes.  In the second class we will meet in Terry’s studio at WheatonArts to glaze, decorate, and slip the pots using his glazes and colorants. We will then set dates to fire the work in both his gas reduction kiln and his salt glaze kiln. This will be a great opportunity to explore alternative firing methods not available in most school and art center facilities.  Each student should be able to complete 6-10 finished pots.  There will be a $10 dollar materials fee and a $10 dollar firing fee paid at time of registration.  Intermediate wheel and hand building experience needed.

Come create a luminous mosaic to brighten this dark time of year. By adhering translucent colored glass tesserae (pieces) to clear glass you will make a work that can be put in front of a lamp or a window. In this workshop you will cut and shape stained glass using a variety of tools, adhere the pieces with clear silicone, and complete your project with grout (which serves as the foil in traditional stained glass). Materials will be provided including a 7” glass circle with a hole so your beautiful creation can be easily hung to let the light shine through! Sun patterns will be provided although you are welcome to bring a design of your own (which we may need to simplify given the time available). Beginners and experienced mosaicists welcome.

Grow a mosaic flower in two days using gorgeous smalti from Mexico. Smalti is a traditional hand cut mosaic glass, thicker than stained glass but very easy to work with. The two sides display subtle color and texture variations so there is fabulous diversity even within a single shade. Each piece is hand cut so the shapes vary in a beautiful organic way. You also will use wheeled nippers to make additional cuts. This is an opportunity to use a really special material. All materials and tools will be provided as will flower patterns. You are also welcome to make your own design using the colors provided. You will go home with a 6” square blooming beauty for the spring.
