WheatonArts provides unique opportunities for individual and collaborative art making in a variety of art mediums. Our instructor-led workshops are designed for all levels and provide creative challenges and learning experiences.

Metal Casting_2Metal Casting: Cuttlefish Bone Casting

This workshop will introduce you to the ease and speed of cuttlefish bone casting. Pouring molten metal into the skeleton of a sea creature, we will make simple to complex designs for finished pieces or parts to be used for fabrication. Some basic jewelry techniques and coloring metal will also be demonstrated. During this fast-paced workshop, you should be able to complete several pieces.

Begin your journey with stained glass! During this 2-day intensive class, you will learn the history of stained glass, how to cut glass, and basic design techniques while making stained glass sun catchers. You’ll also learn how to create your own stained glass projects using the copper foil technique. No prerequisite.

Take the next step in building your stained glass skills! During this class you will build on the techniques you learned in Stained Glass I. You will refine and polish your skills of design, pattern preparation, glass selection, cutting glass, foiling and soldering.

Introduction to Glass Beadmaking

Flameworking, also known as lampworking, is a glassmaking process during which the artist uses the flame of a torch to melt colored or clear glass rods. Once molten, the artist shapes the glass using gravity and tools. This class will present a comprehensive introduction to flameworking that will give you an overview of safety issues, costs, and equipment involved as well as the experience and technique of making beads.

This is a combination of a demonstration and a hands-on workshop. During this class you will be making pots for the salt kiln in April and coming back to fire them in May. A salt kiln is a high temperature, cone 10 kiln that uses rock salt at the end of the firing to form a glaze on the outside of the pieces. On May 6 we will be glazing our pots, loading and starting the kiln. On May 7, your attendance is not required all day but the kiln will be firing and you are welcome to stay as long as you want to learn about the firing process. Come prepared to get dirty. You should bring a towel, an apron, and your favorite pottery tools. Previous experience with clay required.

One person’s trash can be the same person’s treasure. While learning to facet the richly colored, inch-thick Dalle de Verre (French for slab of glass), Claire discovered that the residual chips are themselves visually compelling raw mosaic materials. It continued from there . . . Come join Claire’s exploration of Dalle’s mosaic potential! Learn to process it using a faceting hammer and wheeled nippers. Create a variety of tesserae (pieces): thin and shell-like, cube-like, amorphous. Explore the effect of different substrates under Dalle (reflective and non reflective materials, clear glass). Experiment with placement resulting in outcomes like high dimension and blended colors. Plan to bring home an 8” x 10” mosaic.

Papermaking Intensive: An Introduction

Join us as we explore the process of making paper by hand. You will learn the basic techniques of papermaking including pulp preparation, sheet forming, and pressing. We will make the paper from professional quality pulp. A variety of dyes and pigment will be available to color your paper.

At the end of the class some papers will be wet. If you would like to take your damp papers please bring a cookie sheet or other container for transport.

Instructor: Daisy Greenwell

In this one-day course on basic metalsmithing techniques, you will learn how to manipulate metal sheet using a jeweler’s saw. You will pierce out simple shapes and fabricate a layered pendant, brooch, or keychain of your own design through the use of sawing, filing, drilling, riveting, and sanding. No previous experience with metals is necessary, as this crash course on beginning metalwork will cover all that you need to know in order to create a stunning piece of wearable art. Materials will be provided, however, you should begin to brainstorm designs before you arrive at class. You are encouraged to think of simple shapes and symbols that inspire you, and come to class with a couple sketches or images printed from the internet. These ideas will be the basis for a beautifully designed object to be made in copper, brass, and nickel silver.

Join us and learn to design and fabricate custom jewelry. Do you have that singular beautiful bead you bought laying in the bottom of your drawer? In this class you will design a piece of jewelry using pre-made glass beads. We will demonstrate how to use simple tools and findings to construct your design.

Sourcing information will be available so you can continue creating custom jewelry at home.

Have only one weekend to spare? This is an experience made just for you! You will spend two full days in our glass studio, learning to blow glass with a highly experienced staff. Designed for the beginning glassblower, the class will cover the fundamentals of working and forming molten glass into basic shapes. You will also become familiar with equipment and movement in the hot shop, as well as how to work with a partner. This is the perfect class to get a taste for glassblowing and its endless possibilities! Prerequisite: None.

Join us in this fun clay project that celebrates spring gardens. Artist, Tessa Peterzak will guide you through a sculptural gnome project. Pre-made clay forms will be available for you to manipulate and add your own, personal touch. You will learn to sculpt and mold the parts of a gnome. The gnomes will be finished by a process called salt firing so that their creative features will shine. This project is designed to be a creative experience for families as well as individuals.

Ready to play with clay? In this workshop you will create and design your own pinch pot using air dry clay. A demonstration on how to make a basic bowl will take place in the beginning of the class. From there, you can choose to add decorative elements to your bowl to make it uniquely yours. All projects can be taken home the day of the class. Once dry, you can paint your pot at home with acrylic paints (not included in this class).

You should wear comfortable clothing that may get dirty.

Prepare to get pulpy! In this workshop you will learn the basics of making recycled handmade paper made from 100% post-consumer waste paper. Flowers, plants, and seeds will be available to create inclusions within your paper. You should wear comfortable clothing that may get dirty.

In this introductory workshop, you will learn the basics of screen printing and will print your own unique artwork. You will be guided through the process of choosing a design and pulling a print.
