Traditions and Identity: Native American Arts and Cultures in New Jersey

This is a program intended to present various expressions of Native American traditional culture from the perspective of its bearers. We are going to see people’s stories and people’s beliefs as embedded in the messages of the artifacts, as reflected in the different elements of spiritual and material culture. The exhibition is designed to show the significance of the folk arts and crafts in the past and in the contemporary individual and community life. The focus of the program is on the Lenni- Lenape’s traditions and folk arts and the various ways in which “the original people of Cumberland County” define themselves and their culture as being, doing, and talking.

Various items, texts, photos, maps, audio and video materials will be on display to enlighten the various aspects of the Native Americans’ Spiritual life (Medicine, Religion, Ceremonies, Music, Dance, Songs, Oral History, Language, Beliefs, etc.), Material Culture (Subsistence: hunting, fishing, food, utensils; Wigwam and Sweat Lodge will be built; Clothing (Regalia) and Adornment for men and women, Games, Different Craft objects: stone carving, woodcarving, bone carving, basketry, shells decorations, feathers, buckskin works, etc
