Tales of The Jersey Devil
A scholarly and scary look at the many faces of South Jersey’s most enduring legend opens with a special program and reception on November 22 at Wheaton Village. The comprehensive exhibition, curated by Dr. Iveta Pirgova (Down Jersey Folklife Center) and Dr. Stephen Winick (Delaware Valley Folklife Center), brings together a fascinating array of artistic representations of the monster of the Pine Barrens, plus riveting first person accounts and retellings of sightings. The Jersey Devil has been a part of local folklore from at least the time of the American Revolution. Stories of sightings have caused panics, and brought both fear and tourists to Southern New Jersey for over two centuries. We found the Jersey Devil depicted in drawings, paintings, and sculpture. There have even been displays of what was claimed to be the skeleton of the Jersey Devil. The legend lives on in a contemporary series of comic books, a continuing search for new evidence by investigators of the paranormal, and in the controlled fierceness of an NHL hockey team.
The opening program includes:
- Welcome and opening remarks by Iveta Pirgova and Stephen Winick
Presentations by:
- Harry Leeds: The Perception of the Jersey Devil legend in the Leeds family with video film
- Jim Albertson: The Jersey Devil Project & “The Devil of the Pines”
