Japanese Tea Ceremony conducted by Mariko Ono

The tea ceremony, or chanoyu, is an aesthetic experience unique to Japan that features the serving and drinking of matcha, a powdered green tea. Chanoyu involves more than merely enjoying a cup of tea in a stylized manner. The ceremony developed under the influence of Zen Buddhism, the aim of which is, in simple terms, to purify the soul by becoming one with nature. As an aesthetic pursuit, the tea ceremony involves the appreciation of the tea room, the garden attached to it, the utensils used in serving the tea, and the decor of the setting, such as a hanging scroll or a flower arrangement.
The participants in the ceremony
will learn about the Ura Senke
tradition of tea, about Chado (The
Way of Tea) and its four principles of harmony, respect, purity and
tranquility. Prior to their participation in the usucha (thin tea) tea ceremony performed by Mariko Ono visitors
will be given handouts containing some rules of etiquette for guests at a
Japanese Tea ceremony. Mariko Ono is an upper classman in the art of Japanese
Tea Ceremony of the School
of Ura Senke.
Limited Seating. Entrance to the Folklife/Education Center is included in the price of admission to WheatonArts.
