Fellowship Program

Program Description

Fellowships

We are proud to offer Fellowships each year to international artists working in glass. Fellowships are awarded for a duration of three months and six-weeks. These shorter sessions provide an ideal opportunity for artists with young families, artists whose professional commitments do not afford them the option of a three-month residency, and for teams of artists wishing to collaborate on a particular project. Six-week fellowship applicants should contact the CGCA to discuss the possibility of accommodating assistants or other alternate situations. Please note that assistants cannot be granted personal studio access. Artists who have received CGCA Fellowships must wait three years before reapplying to the program.

Fellows are expected to be proficient in the processes and techniques represented in their application goals, and to work together, supporting one another as partners for all blowing and casting projects. Fellows work toward a common goal of advancing their careers through the perfection or refinement of techniques needed to develop a new or expanded body of work. The CGCA program is an environment where we provide the facilities, equipment and a technical orientation; however we do not have technical assistance on hand. All work from design through annealing and cold-working is the responsibility of the Fellow.

Regardless of duration, each Fellow is provided with rent-free housing, a stipend and studio access. In return, Fellows are asked to donate one piece, created during their residency, for inclusion in the permanent collection of the Museum of American Glass. Fellows are also required to work in view of museum visitors for 12 hours per week.

The Selection Process

The CGCA is committed to the practice of an artist peer review process when selecting fellowship recipients. Applications are generally due in the late summer/early fall; the 2010 due date will be annouced with the posting of the 2010 application.  Past jurors have included Susan Edgerly, James Harmon, Karen LaMonte, John Miller, Deborah Czeresko, Joel Philip Myers, Michael Schunke, Beth Lipman, and Kirstie Rea.

The Studio

The CGCA studio is housed in a 3000 sq. ft. reproduction of the original T.C. Wheaton Glass Factory, and is designed to accommodate a wide variety of glass working techniques. The studio is equipped with both clear and color furnaces for blowing and casting. The factory contains a well-equipped cold-working facility that includes a large capacity sandblaster, a plaster mold-making area and individual studio spaces for Fellows. The facility includes a large number of annealing ovens; each is built specifically for blowing, casting or kiln forming.
