2010 Programs and Events

Composting II Workshop
WheatonArts will host a  Composting II Workshop on April 21, from 10:00am to 12:00 noon.

The program is being presented by the Cumberland County Improvement Authority in conjunction with the Cumberland Master Gardeners Program and Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Cumberland County for residents who want to learn more on how they can improve their backyard composting techniques.

Master Composter Virginia Lamb
will lead the course instruction. She has over 20 years experience in environmental education, with a focus on solid waste management, waste reduction, backyard composting, organic gardening and school gardens. More than 26 percent of the garbage we discard is organic waste - plant and food materials that could be kept out of landfills and turned into rich compost, what gardeners call "black gold". Organic waste decomposing in landfills also is the number one source of the greenhouse gas methane, which is 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the earth's atmosphere.

Come learn simple, effective ways to turn organic waste into compost and you too can reduce waste, create a great garden resource, and help to slow global warming. Wheaton Arts is home of the Cumberland County Master Gardeners Program and is a compost demonstration site where residents can see several working composters by different manufactures.

To register for the workshop and reserve your space you must call 856-451-2800 and ask for Viola Carson or Tammy Commander. The cost is $10 payable to the Extension Service Programs Account. Registration deadline is Monday, April 19, 2010.
