WheatonArts :: Calendar :: 2010 Programs and Events :: Quilt Show 2010
2010 Programs and Events
We invite you to view nearly 200 examples of quilters’ art through the ages. The pieces on exhibit reflect a variety of techniques and personal styles that make each one unique to its maker.
This year’s show, located in the WheatonArts Event Center, includes all of the judged quilts and other quilt displays, as well as a number of specialty fabric and supplies merchants. Hourly demonstrations, a wonderful selection of boutique items and several unique special exhibits will add to the excitement.
Also in the Event Center you will find the quilt appraisals table, where you can have your quilt identified and appraised by AQA certified appraiser Karen Deaver.
Quilt raffle tickets will be sold just inside the entrance and refreshments will be available in the adjoining dining room. Enjoy the Show!

FEATURED DISPLAYS -
Helen Garrison, Our Guild Inspiration
Meet Helen Garrison, a most unusual quilter and our guild inspiration. Helen raised her family, assisted her husband in their garage business and tended to other family and friends.
Later in her career, about twenty or so years ago, Helen took up quilting - - - and not in an ordinary way! Although she has made many, many quilts herself, she is responsible for numerous women also becoming quilters.
She invited them into her home and tutored them through the processes of quilt making.
Helen has served as a mainstay in the “Charity Baby Quilt Project” of the Garden Patch Quilters; has demonstrated quilting at each Garden Patch quilt show; and has, most recently, hand quilted our guild’s 2009-2010 raffle quilt.
One of Helen’s most memorable quotes when asked how to become a better hand quilter was “Practice, Practice, Practice!”
The Australian Connection -
During a 2009 visit to Melbourne, Australia, Garden Patch Quilters member Lois Fineman was invited to attend a quilt meeting of the ELF Patchwork Group. ELF stands for “Eight Lovely Friends” who generously gave a quilt top for the Garden Patch’s Charity Quilts Program. The quilt was completed here, making it a truly International quilt. The ELF’s have been interviewed for “Patchwork & Quilting”, one of Australia’s popular quilting magazines.
The South Jersey Crazy Quilt Guild -
Crazy Quilting is alive and well in South Jersey. The
group was formed in 1999 in order to promote crazy
quilting and to give those already addicted the
opportunity to indulge in their favorite pastime.
Meetings are held the first Wednesday of each month
a 7 p.m. in the McCowan Memorial Library, 15
Pitman Ave., Pitman, NJ. The meetings are casual
affairs where anyone interested in crazy quilting can come to share, learn, admire and be inspired.
The Garden Patch Challenge -
Garden Patch Quilters again challenged their members in 2009 with a “Fourth of July Challenge.” Everyone who wanted to participate received a quarter yard of fabric which had to be used somewhere in the piece. Entries could be no larger than 40" x 40" or a total of 160" around.
The variety of interpretations was amazing, from traditional styles to really “outside the box”. The winners were determined by member votes.
EXHIBITS
This year’s show entries are being judged by Judith Gunter, NQA certified judge, teacher, lecturer and award winning quilter. Judi’s quilts have been displayed at the Schweinfurth Art Center in New York, the International Quilt Show in Houston, the American Quilter’s Society Quilt Show in Paducah, the Maryland State House and numerous local and regional shows. Her work has also been published in Miniature Quilts, Traditional Quiltworks, Quilting Today, and Ladies Circle Patchwork Quilts magazines.
She has taught and lectured regionally at the Williamsburg Quilt Festival, the World Quilt and Textile Festival, the Quilter’s Hall of Fame,
Pennsylvania National Quilt Extravaganza, and Quilt Odyssey.
