Eco Fair Guest Speaker Information

Jane Kirkland is an award-winning author dedicated to educating our children on the nature that surrounds us such as the birds, trees, butterflies, and dragonflies we can find in our own backyards, school-yards, and local parks. She works tirelessly, speaking at schools, conferences, and events all over the US. She keynoted at the Pennsylvania's Governor's Institute for Environmental Educators in 2005, was featured at Disney's Epcot Center, at the Urban Ecology Center in Milwaukee, and many National Wildlife Refuges, parks, and events with environmentally concerned organizations.

Jane is a popular spokesperson for the media when it comes to the topic of nature, our children, and their families. She's been featured on Animal Planet TV, interviewed on NPR and quoted in numerous magazines such as Parents, Family Circle, Parenting, and Redbook.

Her series of Take A Walk® Books are recommended by the National Science Teachers Association, the National Gardening Association, and Animal Planet's TV star Jeff Corwin, just to name a few. Jane and her books have won many awards including The National Arbor Day Foundation's Education Award for 2005, a Teachers Choice Award for 2006, ForeWord Magazines Book of the Year Finalist 2004, and the National Parenting Center's Seal of Approval.

Lance Simmens has spent the last three decades involved in a variety of public policy issues. In 1993 he helped establish the first Federal Office of Sustainable Development in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. In 1995 he received the highest honorary award from the U.S. Department of Commerce for his pioneering work in sustainable fisheries in New England and the Pacific Northwest.

He currently serves as Special Assistant for Intergovernmental Affairs to Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, acting as liaison to local governments and local elected officials. In this capacity he also serves as the Governor’s point person on the development of wind and solar energy and he recently received a Green Power Leadership award from Citizen’s for Pennsylvania’s Future.

Lance became one of the first individuals trained by former Vice-President Al Gore and the Climate Project to deliver presentations on climate change. To date he has delivered many presentations is a variety of venues, including high schools, colleges, town meetings and national conferences.
